Provence by Design

Lourmarin, Aix-en-Provence, L’Isle-sur-la-Sorgue & the Luberon

April 27 - May 3, 2027

This is not a sightseeing tour.

This is a thoughtfully curated week in the South of France — shaped through return visits, careful scouting, and a growing circle of local creatives — — for travelers who care about art, design, artisanship, good food, and meaningful connection.

We’ll wander ancient stone villages and flea markets, step inside working studios and behind-the-scenes creative spaces, cook Provençal classics in a country kitchen, and spend time in landscapes that have inspired artists and makers for centuries.

You don’t need to be an artist.
You don’t need to speak French.
You just need to be curious.

Led by Eva Jorgensen — MFA-trained creative director, French speaker, author of Paris by Design, and founder of By Design Trips — Provence by Design brings together a small group of kind, curious travelers for a week that feels both inspiring and fun.

Eva first fell in love with Provence as a teenager, then returned as an adult for extended research and to lead groups — thoughtfully shaping this experience through careful scouting and local creative introductions.

Come exactly as you are.

What Makes This Trip Different

  • A calm, deeply connected curator-host — offering rare creative access while keeping the week grounded, personal, and beautifully paced

  • An intentionally small group (10–12 people, including your host) — small enough for real connection, private access, and ease

  • A hands-on pottery workshop in a local atelier

  • A Provençal cooking class in a country kitchen, followed by a long shared lunch

  • Behind-the-scenes visits with artists and creatives in their homes and working studios

  • A Sunday morning at the legendary L’Isle-sur-la-Sorgue flea market — one of the most celebrated antique markets in Europe

  • A beautifully unhurried visit to Domaine Château La Coste — a vineyard-meets-art-foundation experience that feels quietly extraordinary

  • An intimate apéro dinatoire with local creatives

  • Unhurried time in Aix-en-Provence — museums, markets, and beautifully curated independent shops

  • A cozy, no-reservations “Provence pantry” dinner — regional cheeses, bread, honey, fruit, small bites, and a good bottle of wine

Think of this as a curated edit: shaped by Eva’s early connection to Provence, refreshed through extended research and careful scouting, and brought to life through trusted local creative introductions.

What It Feels Like To Be On This Trip

A week where you can finally exhale — because the details are handled.

Mornings that begin gently, with good coffee and the sense that you’re exactly where you’re meant to be.

Days that feel textured and inspiring — beauty, craft, conversation — without the pressure to keep up.

The pleasure of wandering at your own pace, then coming back together for the moments that matter.

Being welcomed into creative spaces that feel personal and intimate, with time to ask questions and take it all in.

A rhythm of shared meals and quiet pockets in between — time to freshen up, reset, and feel human.

And the kind of group dynamic that’s hard to explain until you experience it: easy, kind, funny, intelligent — no performing required.

Inspired — but not overwhelmed.
Thoughtfully guided — with plenty of breathing room built in.
Connected — without pressure.

Our Values

Travel is most meaningful when it’s rooted in connection — to the place, to the people who live and create there, and to one another.

We prioritize kindness, curiosity, and generosity of spirit. We support independent artists, makers, designers, and chefs — the people whose lived creativity gives a place its soul.

Travelers of all backgrounds and identities are welcome here.

A portion of proceeds from each trip supports carefully selected nonprofit organizations doing meaningful work in the world.

We travel with curiosity and flexibility. Europe moves at its own rhythm, and occasionally plans shift — often for the better. A spirit of ease and openness makes the experience more beautiful for everyone.

Above all, we create a space where people feel at ease — free to appreciate beauty, ask questions, laugh, and just be themselves.

Our Home for the Week

We’ll stay in a thoughtfully restored boutique hotel in the heart of one of France’s officially designated “Most Beautiful Villages.”

Stone facades, narrow pedestrian streets, and café tables tucked into sun-warmed corners — the kind of place where you naturally slow down.

The hotel blends Provençal charm with clean, considered design: textured walls, linen curtains, tiled floors, and rooms that feel simple, serene, and quietly refined.

Breakfast each morning is generous and relaxed — fresh juices, eggs, breads, seasonal fruit, granola, and warm croissants — taken at an unhurried pace before the day begins.

At the end of each day, you’ll return somewhere that feels welcoming, intimate, and easy.

Itinerary

FLOW OF THE WEEK

Each day has its own rhythm. Some are fuller — with private visits, workshops, and shared meals — and others open up into bigger stretches of personal time. Along the way, you’ll also have built-in space to explore at your own pace: wandering a museum on your own, shopping in a great neighborhood, slipping back to the hotel to reset before dinner. The week is thoughtfully balanced — not rigid — with time to absorb what you’re seeing and enjoy it fully.

DAY 1

Arrive at the Avignon TGV station, where we’ll be greeted and driven through the Provençal countryside to our boutique hotel in one of France’s officially designated “Most Beautiful Villages.”

As with each day of the trip, we’ll have a kind, professional English-speaking driver transporting us in a comfortable Mercedes van — letting the logistics feel effortless.

After settling in, we’ll stroll to the nearby château to admire its architecture and sweeping views over the village we’ll call home for the week.

We’ll gather for a welcome apéro at a charming café as golden light settles over the stone facades.

Dinner this evening is at the hotel’s stylish restaurant, known for its thoughtful take on local, organic French fare — a beautiful beginning to the week.

DAY 2

Breakfast awaits each morning — fresh juices, organic eggs, homemade breads and croissants, seasonal fruit, granola, and coffee served in a relaxed, light-filled setting.

Today we head into the countryside for a visit to Domaine Château La Coste — a vineyard where contemporary art and architecture unfold across the landscape.

From its architect-designed café and museum shop to the varied terrain of vineyards, woods, and rolling hills, it’s a delightful place to discover.

We’ll enjoy lunch overlooking the vines before continuing on to Aix-en-Provence for a free afternoon.

Wander its narrow streets, visit a museum, sample pastries, browse independent shops, or settle into a sidewalk café and watch the world go by.

After returning to our home village, the evening is free for dinner at your choice of local restaurants. We’ll gladly offer suggestions.

DAY 3

Today is devoted to one of the most celebrated flea markets in Europe — L’Isle-sur-la-Sorgue.

We’ll spend the morning exploring its waterways, antique stalls, and design shops, with time to wander at your own pace.

Lunch is at a restaurant whose menu shifts with the market’s best offerings. If you’d like, we’ll have a little show-and-tell with our finds.

In the afternoon, we’ll have more time to browse independent shops, visit a nearby art space, or pause in one of the town’s many lovely cafés.

Dinner tonight is relaxed and convivial — a cozy neighborhood spot just steps from our hotel.

DAY 4

A free morning to explore the incredible open-air market of our village.

In the afternoon, we’ll visit the home and garden of a local writer, hearing her story and enjoying tea in her gorgeous and authentic Provençal setting.

Next, we’ll step inside an artisanal atelier known for a specialty craft of the region — gaining a deeper appreciation for the skill behind what we so often see as “simple.”

Dinner this evening is at a lively independent restaurant that champions local growers and seasonal ingredients.

DAY 5

This morning we visit the studio of a local ceramic artist in a nearby village. She’ll guide us through an age-old technique as we create our own handmade piece — tactile, meditative, deeply satisfying.

Lunch is at a cheerful café helmed by a female chef known for infusing her dishes with whimsy and beauty.

Later, we’ll enjoy a private visit to the former home of a gifted 20th-century artist — once connected to Picasso — now a museum and creative residency space. It’s the kind of place where you can feel the layers of history and imagination still lingering in the rooms.

In the early evening, we’ll gather for an apéro dinatoire with a small group of local creatives — conversation flowing easily, ideas exchanged across languages, the kind of connection that feels both spontaneous and intentional.

DAY 6

After breakfast, we head to the countryside for a Provençal cooking class with an accomplished (yet wonderfully down-to-earth) local chef. Together we’ll prepare lunch in her country kitchen — chopping, tasting, laughing — and then sit down to savor what we’ve made.

In the afternoon, we’ll explore the charming streets and shops of a nearby village in the Alpilles before visiting the atmospheric former home of a legendary artist set into the Mediterranean landscape — a place of solitude, intensity, and creative transformation.

As the week begins to wind down, there’s space to linger. To reflect. To notice what has shifted.

For our final evening, we’ll gather for an intimate Provençal pantry dinner — regional cheeses, bread, honey, crudités, wine, and conversation stretching into golden hour. Unhurried. Warm. Just us.

DAY 7

Enjoy one final breakfast at the hotel before we transfer you to the Avignon TGV station.

You’ll leave Provence creatively replenished — inspired not only by what you’ve seen, but by the conversations shared, the meals lingered over, and the beauty absorbed at a slower pace.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this trip only for artists or creatives?

Not at all. Many guests love art, design, gardens, and beautiful spaces — but you do not need to be an artist or work in a creative field to belong here. Curiosity and appreciation matter much more than credentials.

I’ve never traveled in a group before. What is it like?

This is not a traditional tour. The group is small (10–12 total), the atmosphere is relaxed rather than performative. You’re free to wander during outings like flea market + certain museum visits, and take quiet time when needed. There’s no expectation to be an expert — just to be present. Most guests tell me they were surprised by how natural and enjoyable the dynamic felt.

I’m coming solo — will I feel comfortable?

Yes. Many guests join on their own. The small group size and shared meals create easy connection without pressure. There is always space to engage — and space to step away when you need it.

Will I have my own room?

Yes. The trip is priced based on private room occupancy. If you’re traveling with a partner, friend, or family member and prefer to share, a limited number of shared rooms are available at a reduced rate. We do not pair guests who do not already know each other.

How physically demanding is the trip?

We explore primarily on foot within historic city centers, with regular walking throughout the day. There are cobblestones and stairs, but we move at a thoughtful pace and build in natural pauses and rest.

Getting There

Our group transfer will depart from Avignon TGV station at a designated time on arrival day and return there at the end of the trip.

Most travelers choose one of the following options:

  • Fly into Paris, enjoy a night or two in the city, then take the high-speed TGV train to Avignon.

  • Fly into Paris and continue to Avignon the same day (TGV trains run regularly). Many guests then choose to spend a night or two in Avignon before meeting our group transfer at Avignon TGV on trip start day.

  • Fly into Marseille and rent a car if you’d like to explore the countryside before the trip, then return the car before meeting the group transfer at Avignon TGV.

Detailed arrival guidance — including recommended train routes and timing — will be provided after booking. We always suggest arriving in France at least one day early to allow for travel delays and to ease into the time change.

What kind of traveler tends to enjoy this trip?

Someone who appreciates beauty, good food, meaningful conversation, and thoughtful design. Someone curious and open — but not interested in rushing from sight to sight. Whether it’s your first or third time in Provence or your tenth trip to Europe, this experience is about depth, connection, and savoring a place rather than checking it off a list. Many guests tell me they leave feeling deeply inspired — and grateful they said yes.

What happens if I need to cancel?

A non-refundable deposit secures your place. Because this trip requires advance commitments to accommodations, restaurants, and private visits with creative hosts, payments are non-refundable. If you need to cancel and we are able to fill your spot from the waiting list, we will make every reasonable effort to facilitate a transfer, though this cannot be guaranteed. Travel insurance is strongly recommended.
