Belgium by Design

April 13-19, 2027 — Now Booking
April 14–20, 2026 — Sold Out
April 27–May 3, 2026 — Sold Out

A thoughtfully curated week in Ghent, Antwerp, and Brussels — exploring spring gardens, private artist studios, historic homes, and the quiet creative energy that runs through Belgium.

This is not a sightseeing tour.
It’s an intimate, design-led experience shaped by relationships, thoughtful timing, and trusted local introductions — including connections from Eva’s long-standing Paris creative community.

Led by Eva Jorgensen — MFA-trained creative director, author of Paris by Design, and founder of By Design Trips — Belgium by Design brings together a small group of kind, curious travelers for a week that feels both inspiring and easeful.

Eva first lived in Belgium in her early twenties, immersed in daily life and language — and has recently returned for in-depth research and scouting to thoughtfully design this experience.

You don’t need to be an artist or work in a creative field to belong here. Some travelers are designers and writers. Many are not. The common thread isn’t profession — it’s curiosity, warmth, and a love of beautiful, meaningful experiences.

Come exactly as you are.

What Makes This Trip Different

  • A calm, deeply connected curator-host — offering rare creative access while keeping the week grounded, personal, and beautifully paced

  • An intentionally small group (10–12 people, including your host) — small enough for real connection, private access, and ease

  • A golden-hour visit to a hidden castle garden on the outskirts of Ghent

  • A private dinner at an intimate, chef-led neighborhood restaurant

  • Behind-the-scenes visits with artists in their homes and working studios

  • A hands-on letterpress workshop using antique wooden type

  • A pre-opening visit to a 1930s Art Deco villa and garden (Villa van Buuren)

  • Bouquet picking at a working flower farm surrounded by tulip fields at peak bloom

  • A private visit and creative workshop at the home, gallery, and studio of Belgian artist Isabelle de Borchgrave

  • Unhurried time in beautifully curated independent shops I return to again and again — plus a Belgian flea market with real soul

  • An evening concert at De Bijloke, Ghent’s historic music hall

Think of this as a curated edit: built from Eva’s lived connection to Belgium, refreshed through recent scouting and a trusted creative network across France and Belgium.

What It Feels Like To Be On This Trip

A week where you can finally exhale — because the details are handled.

Mornings that begin gently, with good coffee and the sense that you’re exactly where you’re meant to be.

Days that feel textured and inspiring — beauty, craft, conversation — without the pressure to keep up.

The pleasure of wandering at your own pace, then coming back together for the moments that matter.

Being welcomed into creative spaces that feel personal and intimate, with time to ask questions and take it all in.

A rhythm of shared meals and quiet pockets in between — time to freshen up, reset, and feel human.

And the kind of group dynamic that’s hard to explain until you experience it: easy, kind, funny, intelligent — no performing required.

Inspired — but not overwhelmed.
Thoughtfully guided — with plenty of breathing room built in.
Connected — without pressure.

Our Values

Travel is most meaningful when it’s rooted in connection — to the place, to the people who live and create there, and to one another.

We prioritize kindness, curiosity, and generosity of spirit. We support independent artists, makers, designers, and chefs — the people whose lived creativity gives a place its soul.

Travelers of all backgrounds and identities are welcome here.

A portion of proceeds from each trip supports carefully selected nonprofit organizations doing meaningful work in the world.

We travel with curiosity and flexibility. Europe moves at its own rhythm, and occasionally plans shift — often for the better. A spirit of ease and openness makes the experience more beautiful for everyone.

Above all, we create a space where people feel at ease — free to appreciate beauty, ask questions, laugh, and simply be themselves.

Our Home for the Week

We stay in a quietly elegant canal-side boutique hotel in the historic center of Ghent — chosen for its architectural character, welcoming atmosphere, and walkable location.

Airy rooms, excellent breakfasts, a legendary bar with a view, and easy access to everything make it the perfect base. After full days exploring studios, gardens, and museums, you’ll return to a space that feels comfortable, calm, and personal.

The Itinerary

FLOW OF THE WEEK

Each day has its own rhythm. Some are fuller — with private visits, workshops, and shared meals — and others open up into bigger stretches of personal time. Along the way, you’ll also have built-in space to explore at your own pace: wandering a museum on your own, shopping in a great neighborhood, slipping back to the hotel to reset before dinner. The week is thoughtfully balanced — not rigid — with time to absorb what you’re seeing and enjoy it fully.

DAY 1

Arrive in Ghent and settle into our canal-side boutique hotel — a beautifully restored historic building in the heart of the city. With soaring windows and thoughtful interiors, it’s the kind of place that makes your body exhale.

We’ll gather for welcome drinks in a room with a view and ease into the rhythm of the week together.

As golden hour approaches, we’ll head just outside the city for a private visit to an under-the-radar castle garden.

Dinner is at an intimate, chef-led neighborhood restaurant that’s opening tonight just for us— refined Belgian cuisine in a modern, cozy space.

DAY 2

Breakfast awaits each morning — fresh pastries, fruit, eggs, yogurt, juice, and coffee in a light-filled room overlooking the city.

Today we’re off to Brussels.

We begin with a pre-opening visit to the 1930s Art Deco jewel, Villa van Buuren. Before the public arrives, we’ll wander its exquisite interiors and gardens at an unhurried pace.

For lunch, we’ll enjoy fresh seafood and local specialties in a lively square.

In the afternoon, we’ll visit the studio of a Belgian artist who spent decades designing for major opera houses before turning her attention to her extraordinary handmade silk flowers. We’ll step inside her enchanting world, hear her story, and see her meticulous craftsmanship up close.

Before returning to Ghent, we’ll spend time in one of Brussels’ most charming, tucked-away neighborhoods — the kind of place locals treasure and most tourists never find. Independent boutiques, beautifully curated shops, and café terraces tucked into quiet corners make it a delight to wander at your own pace.

Dinner this evening is at a beloved local restaurant known for its vibrant flavors and effortless style.

DAY 3

A free morning to sleep in, wander the canals, explore a museum, or settle into a café.

In the afternoon, we’ll gather for a hands-on letterpress workshop. Using antique wooden type and historic presses, we’ll create our own hand-printed poster — tactile, meditative, deeply satisfying.

Afterward, we’ll board a private canal boat and drift back through Ghent’s waterways, the light dancing across facades we pass by.

Dinner tonight is at a relaxed, design-forward restaurant. We’ll let the conversation flow.

DAY 4

Today we head to Antwerp.

Our morning begins at the extraordinary Museum Plantin-Moretus — the only museum in the world designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site. In this preserved 16th-century home and workshop, we’ll trace the origins of printing where it first flourished, and have the chance to learn about the pioneering women who helped make it a success.

You’ll then have free time in Antwerp’s elegant city center to explore jewelry ateliers, bookshops, museums, and cathedral squares. Lunch is on your own — we’ll happily share suggestions.

Later, we’ll visit a working flower farm surrounded by tulip fields (timing dependent on bloom). You’ll pick your own bouquet and wander rows of color in the open countryside.

Dinner tonight is at a refined Flemish restaurant known for its thoughtful take on regional cuisine.

DAY 5

We return to Brussels for Floralia Brussels — a spectacular spring garden exhibition unfolding across formal gardens and wooded paths in full bloom.

Afterward, we’ll visit the home, gallery, and studio of renowned Belgian artist Isabelle de Borchgrave. Alongside a lovely brunch spread, we’ll experience her creative world firsthand and take part in a workshop that reflects her lifelong devotion to craftsmanship and artistry.

Next, we’ll visit a house museum that showcases one of the most iconic examples of Art Nouveau architecture in the world.

Back in Ghent, there will be time to rest and freshen up. I’ll deliver dinner for you to enjoy at the hotel before we head out for the evening.

Tonight, we attend a concert at De Bijloke, the city’s historic music hall. The architecture, the acoustics, the shared hush before the music begins — a beautiful way to experience Ghent’s cultural life together.

DAY 6

It’s flea market morning.

We’ll stroll to Ghent’s lively weekend market to browse antiques, linens, books, and unexpected treasures.

Next, we’ll step inside a remarkable antique shop housed in an 18th-century chapel — cinematic in its beauty.

For lunch, we’ll gather at a charming local favorite known for its savory and sweet homemade tarts.

After some free time, this evening we’ll share farewell drinks at a neighborhood bar we’ve come to love — conversations easy, friendships deepened, the week taking on that quietly magical quality that’s hard to name but unmistakable when it happens.

DAY 7

Enjoy a final morning in Ghent at your own pace. Breakfast is included at the hotel, and you’re free to depart whenever your schedule allows.

You’ll leave Belgium creatively energized, inspired, and part of a small circle of travelers who value beauty, craftsmanship, and thoughtful connection.

“The trips are art and design focused and what makes them so special are the connections to local artists and creatives, many of whom welcomed us into their private studios and homes! Something I could never just go do myself.”

— Danielle W.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this trip only for artists or creatives?

Not at all. Many guests love art, design, gardens, and beautiful spaces — but you do not need to be an artist or work in a creative field to belong here. Curiosity and appreciation are what matter.

I’ve never traveled in a group before. What is it like?

This is not a traditional tour. The group is small (10–12 total), the atmosphere is relaxed rather than performative. You’re free to wander during outings like flea market + certain museum visits, and take quiet time when needed. There’s no expectation to be an expert — just to be present. Most guests tell me they were surprised by how natural and enjoyable the dynamic felt.

I’m coming solo — will I feel comfortable?

Yes. Many guests join on their own. The small group size and shared meals create easy connection without pressure. There is always space to engage — and space to step away when you need it.

Will I have my own room?

Yes. The trip is priced based on private room occupancy. If you’re traveling with a partner, friend, or family member and prefer to share, a limited number of shared rooms are available at a reduced rate. We do not pair guests who do not already know each other.

How physically demanding is the trip?

We explore primarily on foot within historic city centers, with regular walking throughout the day. There are cobblestones and stairs, but we move at a thoughtful pace and build in natural pauses and rest.

How do I get to Ghent?

Our hotel is approximately one hour by taxi from Brussels Airport (BRU) and about 15 minutes from Gent-Sint-Pieters train station. Many guests choose to arrive via train if traveling from elsewhere in Europe. Detailed arrival guidance will be provided after booking.

What kind of traveler tends to enjoy this trip?

Someone who appreciates beauty, good food, meaningful conversation, and thoughtful design. Someone curious and open — but not interested in rushing from sight to sight. Whether it’s your first or third time in Belgium or your tenth trip to Europe, this experience is about depth, connection, and savoring a place rather than checking it off a list. Many guests tell me they leave feeling deeply inspired — and grateful they said yes.

What happens if I need to cancel?

A non-refundable deposit secures your place. Because this trip requires advance commitments to accommodations, restaurants, and private visits with creative hosts, payments are non-refundable. If you need to cancel and we are able to fill your spot from the waiting list, we will make every reasonable effort to facilitate a transfer, though this cannot be guaranteed. Travel insurance is strongly recommended.
